Researchers at Iowa State University have forecast that cellulosic ethanol production in the US will peak at 4.5 billion gallons by 2022, and only if US government incentives are increased to $1.55 per gallon. The researchers concluded that, had the 2007 Energy Act not been passed, cellulosic ethanol and biodiesel production would have been wiped out in the United States due to the opportunity cost for feedstocks and land. The researchers projected a peak production of corn ethanol of 18 billion gallons by 2022.
