Brazil defends good (sugar) ethanol, bashes bad (corn) ethanol

In Italy, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva split with the United States on ethanol production, describing Brazilian sugarcane ethanol as “good ethanol” and US corn-based ethanol as “bad ethanol”. Lula was in Rome to address the UN FAO Food Summit, hastily called this year to address rising global food prices. Meanwhile, a Greens MP representing New Zealand at the conference criticized UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon for singling out biofuels in the food debate.
