The Philippines Department of Energy released new quality standards for biofuels, timed for the increased blends of biodiesel and as required by the Biofuels Act. The specifications come as the mandated levels of biodiesel in the Philippines rise to 2.0 percent next year, while the ethanol mandate increases in February to 5.0 percent. The specifications for biodiesel will focus on coco methyl ester, rather than the fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) associated with jatropha, owing to the low production levels of jatropha to date.
