Canada’s Collingwood Ethanol appeals Ontario shutdown threat over odor complaints
In Canada, Collingwood Ethanol appealed an order from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to institute a noise and odor action plan by August 27 and implement the plan by August 31. The company said that it needs more time to comply with the orders, which are the result of a stench that has local residents up in arms and pointing fingers at the plant.
Biofuels Digest reported on resident complaints yesterday, while Collingwood Connection added that two local residents complained that “Collingwood Ethanol was so vile that I immediately had a face ache, ran too close the windows, lit our odour eater “lamp bergere”…We had to walk our dog with our noses plugged. Enough.”
The company also disputed that it was the sole source of offensive odors, according to company spokesman Bruce Chandler, saying that a ministry report was incorrect in stating that the Colingwood plant was the only one running on a day identified by the ministry.
