In South Africa, Sasol recently gave a comprehensive update on their efforts in new energy technologies. CEO Pat Davies said that the company is now: investigating non-carbon energy technologies, and making “fairly good initial progress”; combining Sasol technology with nuclear technology to provide an additional non-carbon source of heat; banking carbon credits from its Nitro project involving nitrous- oxide abatement; working on a carbon capture and storage technology; and considering a soy-based biodiesel project that is not yet green-lighted due to confusion over South African government biofuel policy. Sasol first became a world leader in producing biofuels during the apartheid era.
