In Ethiopia, the Gaia Association said that it has provided ethanol stoves to more than 1700 families in a pilot program to promote safety and reduce wood consumption. The ethanol fuel for the stoves is produced from molasses, and the program will be expanded from refugee camps to Addis Ababa. Refugee women have been attacked during wood collecting activities near camps, and the rising refugee numbers have prompted fears of local deforestation. The ethanol stoves are an alternative to cost-prohibitive kerosene stoves that are used in Africa as a substitute for traditional three-stone cooking fires.
