Mobile operators launch Green Power for Mobile to power 118,000 base stations by 2012 with renewable power, fuels
In Kenya, the GSM Association, a global trade association representing more than 750 GSM mobile phone operators launched the Green Power for Mobile programme with the goal of helping the mobile industry use solar, wind, and sustainable biofuels, to power 118,000 off-grid base stations in developing countries by 2012, or 50 percent of all off-grid base stations. The Association said that it would save 661 million gallons of diesel per year and reduce carbon emissions by up to 6.3 million tons annually.
The Green Power for Mobile programme is backed by 25 mobile operators, including, XIS, Bharti, Dialog, Digicel, Idea Cellular, Indosat, Econet, Grameenphone, Mobinil, MTC Namibia, MTN Cameroon, MTN Group, MTN Nigeria, MTN Uganda, Orange, Orascom Telecom Holding, Roshan, Safaricom, Smart, Telefonica, Telenor Pakistan, Vimpelcom, Vodacom Tanzania, Vodafone Egypt, Zain Group, and Zantel.
The Association said that it will use biofuels which are produced from feedstocks that have been grown on idle and marginal land, result in lower lifecycle carbon emissions, and are produced in a manner that contributes to the social and economic development of local, rural and indigenous peoples and communities.
