Clinton Global Initiative opens with focus on energy and climate change
The 4th annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting opened in New York today with a call to action by former President Clinton, former Vice-President Al Gore, President Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia, Queen Rania of Jordan, Neville Isdell, Chairman of Coca-Cola; and Bono, cofounder of ONE and the lead singer of U2; and Jim Rogers, CEO of Duke Energy; Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York.
Among the commitments announced this morning, Duke Energy and Arriva announced a partnership to develop a new renewable energy business that would avoid 4 million tons of CO2 emissions annually by 2014. The project will develop 10-12 wood biomass fired power plants – each of which will avoid 400,000 tons of CO2 emissions and power 40,000 homes. The partners said that the venture would also create new green collar jobs in the Southeast.
