The US Department of Energy has made a $900,000 grant to Utah State University and Montana State University to research the growth of algae in geothermal vents and the Great Salt Lake. Utah State energy lab director Jeff Muhs told capitalpress that the project is one of six being funded by DOE, and focuses on algae that tolerates high temperatures because it could more effectively utilize CO2 from power plants.
