| Description: | Among the important applications of algae technology are fuel, nutraceuticals, and wastewater recovery. In the latter, companies such as Algaewheel, Bionavitas and Aquaflow Bionomics have been pioneering the use of algae to remove toxins and unwanted compounds as a natural water treatment strategy. Although algae strains that are ideal for waste water are not always optimized for oil content, the resulting algae can be harvested as biomass for biodiesel or green fuel production, or otherwise used in the fertilizer, feed, or nutraceutical markets.
Algaewheel, based in Indianapolis, has partnered up with Purdue on a wastewater treatment project in 2002 at Rose Acre Farm, for swine waste treatment; in a dairy waste water treatment project (also in Indiana), and a municipal wastewater pilot project in Whitestown, IN. The company recently (Oct 2008) participated in an expo associated with an energy forum featuring Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN), suggesting the company’s interest in the energy market. |
