Description: Bionavitas has been one of the quietest but most persistently interesting algae development companies to emerge out of the hotbed of algae activity in the Pacific Northwest. Commencing operations in the mid-200s, the company has focused on solving the “self-shading” problem that has plagued the scale-up of algae production technology.

The company has developed a proprietary optical technology that permits growth of algae up to 150 cm deep before losing sufficient sunlight to sustain photosynthesis, compared to a few centimeters for standard algae technologies.

The company aims at the fuel market, nutraceuticals and waste remediation.

The company has a working technology at the lab level, which it intends to deploy in closed photobioreactors. CEO Michael Weaver has said that the company is looking at a site in Eastern Washington as well as throughout the Southwest for a location for its pilot-scale plant. The proximity to a liquified nutrient source, such as a livestock slurry, and strong solar characteristics, will be the defining qualities in the site they choose.
