Brazil to increase sugarcane cultivation by 15 million acres by year end: increasing national ethanol production by 11 percent

In Brazil, environment minister Carlos Minc said that Brazil will commence an expansion program for sugarcane that will result in an additional 15 million acres under cultivation without affecting food production. The minister said that the project would be completed by the end of the year. He also said that a satellite monitoring system was being installed by the government to monitor environmental impact and ensure that farmers stayed within their agreements. The National Plan for Climate Change had called for an additional 13 million acres of land to fulfill a goal to increase ethanol production by 11 percent.
