Speculation grows that anti-ethanol stance of Sen. McCain may be a deciding factor in Iowa and the national presidential election

In Iowa, speculation is increasing about the impact of ethanol policy on the election results in the state, with the potential that ethanol will be a deciding issue, because of the impact of farm state votes in the US Electoral College. President George W. Bush carried ethanol producing states Iowa and Missouri in 2004, but Iowa is now rated in the Obama column and Missouri is rated a toss-up. Democratic senator John Kerry lost the state of Iowa by 7 tenths of a percentage point in 2004; currently, pro-ethanol mandate Sen. Obama leads anti-mandate Sen. John McCain by eight percentage points.
