Today in Biofuels Opinion: “The left side of the balance sheet has nothing right and the right side of the balance sheet has nothing left.”

Matthew Quirk, staff editor at The Atlantic Monthly:These are boom times for wind power…And why not? Wind power seems to promise zero emissions and endless cheap power. Still, it’s hard to ignore the parallels to the recent ethanol boom, which was also fueled by mandates and subsidies, and which is now viewed almost universally as a disaster. Wind power is unlikely to cause a global food crisis. But heedless investment in it may provoke blowback of a different sort.”

AIG Vice Chairman Jacob Frenkel: “The left side of the balance sheet has nothing right and the right side of the balance sheet has nothing left. But they are equal to each other. So accounting-wise we are fine.”

    1. The global food shortage that ethanol created is a bad thing, but I don’t think people should be blamed for it. People were scared and trying to find a new way to end dependency on fossil fuels, they just didn’t think everything through. Wind power should definitely be less intrusive on the global economy.
