In Brazil, Bunge, Copersucar, Unica, Itausa, Votorantim and the other leaders of the sugar industry have established a joint venture to finance research in cellulosic ethanol. The technical research will be conducted by the Brazilian government’s crop research agency, Embrapa, and will be financed by the JV. The research organization will also seek partners from overseas. Brazilian companies have expressed strong interest in making ethanol from sugarcane bagasse and also wood chips.
