In Massachusetts, Promethegen announced that it has raised $300,000 of its initial round of capital for the use of “metabolic engineering to develop technologies for the production of biofuels.” The company’s founder recently abandoned plans to launch a $300 million cleantech venture fund (Biofuels Capital Partners) and instead concentrated on the start up. Metabolic engineers optimize the energy cost of cell reproduction and reduce energy waste, establish new uses for energy crops and microorganisms, and produce plants or microorganisms that are optimized for energy characteristics, or for pollution remediation processes.
