Today in Biofuels Opinion: “We are lagging behind [Brazil] in terms of their success in creating a new transportation fuel infrastructure.”

Former US Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle: “We’re not lagging behind on technology. We are lagging behind [Brazil] in terms of their success in creating a new transportation fuel infrastructure. They’ve become the first country completely independent of foreign sources. While we’ve talked a lot about that we’re close to 70 percent dependent on foreign sources with transportation fuel, so we have a long way to go to catch up to countries like Brazil. They did it partly through efficiency, partly through their own fossil fuel development, but largely through the development of alternative fuels, especially ethanol.”

Dr. Andrew Burton, director of the Midwestern Regional Center of the National Institute for Climatic Change Research: “More than 20 continuous years of research into the effects of climate and atmospheric pollution on forest productivity in the Great Lakes region indicate that moderate increases in temperature with sufficient moisture and increased nitrogen deposition have extended the growing season in northern hardwood forests, causing the trees to grow faster and to store more carbon.”
