In Michigan, the Wolverine Power Cooperative submitted a report to the state’s governor and legislature on the potential to produce energy from biomass using idle agricultural land and forest residues. The report concluded that 220,000 tons of forest residue was available, sufficient for 35 MW of power (enough to serve 25,000 households). Using a cellulosic ethanol process, the biomass could also yield up to 20 Mgy of fuel. The report also found that 500,000 unused agricultural acres are available within 75 miles of Rogers City, for switchgrass or other energy crops.
