The Duncan Hunter National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009 was signed by President Bush, and contained numerous provisions to increase energy efficiency and use of alternative energies by the Department of Defense. The bill requires the DoD to consider alternative energy sources, to reduce imports of fossil fuels by air tanker to support fuel-driven generators. A 2001 study of military fuel concluded that the true cost of delivering fuel to the Army in foreign engagements was more than $100 per gallon when all costs were considered.
