In the Philippines, the Kagayan Watershed Alliance has opposed the construction of a $50 million ethanol project in Bayanga and Mambuaya, saying that the project could destroy the Cagayan de Oro River. Alsons Consolidated Resources plans to construct the plant on a 38 acre site, and company executives said that they would use a state of the art water treatment system. The Alliance said that the use of cassava, which contains cyanide, as a feedstock made it impossible to prevent contamination.
