The Des Moines Register provided an analysis of the impact of ethanol on the US elections, with particular focus on Iowa, which went for Bush in 2004 over Kerry but backed Obama in 2008. The study found that twenty counties in the state switched from Bush to Obama, including Kossuth County which has received the most federal ethanol grant support of any county in the state. In other counties, Obama ran ahead of Kerry even in counties where he failed to produce a majority.
