Where's Big Oil in this? It's a good question.

Big Oil has been on the sidelines in the debate this year. There are three schools of thought on this.

1. Since Big Food is paying for war and providing the soldiers, no need to get involved.

2. Big Oil has been steadily becoming more involved in second-generation biofuels, and may see more clearly than others that the issues of first-gen fuels that look so urgent today will pass by quickly enough.

3. Big Oil's PR problems are so intense that they would either make it difficult to assemble a broad coalition against biofuels if they were involved; or alternatively, lessen the impact of the campaign in the public's eye.

Uh, Jim, this is the article I got that I wanted to ask a question about but it's been difficult to find my way here. It's a bit rough getting through the WP hoops, after communicating with you directly and recently.

Great commentary and reflection. Thanks. I sent the link it to a regional listserve, so it'll probably loop back to you.

Question:

Why did you not mention big oil's role in the ethanol attacks?
