Southern California Edison says new plug-in hybrid batteries last up to 180,000 miles in tests

In California, Southern California Edison has commenced tests on a new lithium-ion battery at its Electric Vehicle Technical Center, and said that the newest lithium-ion plug-in batteries received have demonstrated a lifespan of up to 180,000 miles. Long-term battery life is a technical barrier for plug-in hybrids. Southern California Edison is conducting the tests in support of the  Electric Power Research Institute. Plug-in hybrids that run on biofuels are considered the leading candidate for large-scale reduction of emissions and oil consumption.
