In Brazil, president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, addressing the International Conference on Biofuels, said that the financial, poverty and hunger crises emphasized the importance for wealthy nations to invest in the development of new energy sources. But he said that the right path was not for Europe to convert its agriculture to energy crops, but rather to invest in the development of biofuel production in impoverished countries, such as the African nations. He also said it was important to fight disinformation presented by opponents of biofuels. “This is distortion of information and prejudice, which in fact hides interests,” he told the conference.
