Genetically-modified corn from Syngenta, designed for low-cost ethanol, enters public comment period
In Washington, the USDA has requested public comment on a proposal by Syngenta Seeds to distribute a genetically engineered varietal of corn that contains an enzyme that substantially reduces the water and energy inputs required for ethanol production. The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said in a statement that “the scientific evidence indicates that there are unlikely to be any environmental, human health or food safety concerns associated with the GE corn.” The comment period lasts until January 20. 2009. The FDA has already concluded that the enzyme is safe for human and animal consumption.
