Waxman to head US House Energy and Commerce Committee: tougher fuel efficiency, climate change legislation expected

In Washington, Henry Waxman (D-CA) has become the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, replacing Re. John Dingell (D-MI). Dingell had been a fierce defender of the auto industry, while Waxman pledged to move quickly on climate change. Dingell had opposed rapid increases in auto fuel efficiency standards, while Waxman was one of 150 House Democrats who supported a 15 percent emission reduction by 2020.
