Thar Technologies proposes jatropha, kuranj-based biodiesel plant in India using one-step process; eliminates use of hexane
In India, Thar Technologies said that it will build a biodiesel plant in Rajasthan to take advantage of the region’s policy of awarding 30 percent of its wasteland to private companies interested in producing biodiesel from jatropha and karanj. Thar said that it would seek 20 acres near Jaipur to site its plant, and would use both feedstocks in production. Thar recently received $1.9 million in assistance from the US federal government’s Advanced Technology Program to develop a single-step biodiesel process that would use CO2 instead of hexane to extract oil from seeds. The new technology has the potential to reduce energy inputs by 25 percent and reduce overall production cost by 14 percent.
