In Oregon, city officials in Portland are facing criticism over contracts for biodiesel that require purchasing from Oregon-based businesses at high prices compared to conventional diesel, or biodiesel bought on the open market. The city is reported to be paying nearly $7 per gallon for biodiesel, compared to less than $4 per gallons on the spot market. City officials defended the plan, saying that buying local supports the growth of a local biodiesel industry and promotes jobs, while critics of high city spending note that the city is more than $300,000 over budget on fuel for the year.
