Cosan projects 7-8 percent increase in cane harvest; mum on expansion plans in Goias state

In Brazil, Cosan announced that it expects to increase sugarcane production by up to 8 percent in the 2008/09 cane season. The company told Reuters that its 18 mills would crush up to 44.4 million tonnes of cane; observers had earlier noted that the cane harvest season is running late this year due to bad weather. Cosan did not comment on any decision to move forward with a proposal to construct two more cane mills in Goias state. The company lost $114 million in the quarter ending in October due to the higher cost of repaying dollarized debt after the Brazilian real fell in value.
