In Scotland, the Scottish Association for Marine Sciences, Queens University Belfast, the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland and the Institutes of Technology in Dundalk and Sligo in Ireland will collaborate on an $8 million research project on mari-fuels, fuels from the sea. The propject will investigate opportunities to make fuels from both seaweed and algae. Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond told the BBC: “The development of mari-fuels could have a lasting impact on remote and rural communities by providing locally produced, relatively cheap, low-impact fuel as well as serving the local public transport infrastructure.”
