US Department of Energy announces $200 million in grants for commercial-scale advanced biofuels
In Washington, the Department of Energy announced a $200 million round of grants for advanced biofuel plants. Department spokesmen said that the grants would be awarded to between 5 and 12 projects over the next six years. Each project will be expected to reach completion within four years of the award, and will be focused on taking bench or pilot scale facilities up to commercial scale. The grants were announced less than a week after the Energy Information Administration, a division of the Department, expressed the belief that the nation would not be able to scale up its biofuel technologies fast enough to meet the 36 billion gallon mandate in 2022.
