In Germany, Lurgi, a subsidiary of Air Liquide, said that it will partner with Karlsruhe Institute for Technology to expand a pilot-stage advanced biofuels facility at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. A pilot facility built in 2007 has had favorable results. The group converts straw into biocrude, gasifies the liquid, and synthesizes fuels from the mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The expanded plant is expected to open in 2011.
