In California, istockanalyst profiled the Joint Bioenergy Institute, whose partnering founders include the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory headed by newly-designated Energy Secretary Steven Chu. JBEI (”Jay-Bay”) focuses on the use of synthetic biology to develop new commercial paths for the production of cellulosic ethanol and other alternative fuels. JBEI is financed by a $135 million grant from the Department of Energy.
