In California, San Franciscans have wrapped up the city’s annual grease collection drive, to reduce the 65,000 gallons of grease that end up in the city’s sewers and cause up to half of the municipal sewer emergencies. The city collected one ton of grease in 2007 in a post-Thanksgiving drive and two tons in 2008 in a similar effort. Whole Foods and Costco are collecting the grease, which will be utilized for biodiesel production. Currently, it costs $3.5 million annually to clean grease from San Francisco sewers.
