In Canada, Enerkem announced that it has commenced the start-up of its waste-to-biofuels plant in Westbury, Quebec. Construction commenced on the project in October 2007 and was completed in December 2008. The plant will produce 1.3 Mgy of ethanol from used electricity poles. The company uses a gasification technology and produces fuel from syngas, and said it has achieved commercially sustainable production rates of 95 gallons per ton of waste biomass.
