Stanford launches $100 million energy research institute including Center for Sustainable Energy
In California, Stanford University announced that it would launch a $100 million energy research institute. Stanford president John Hennessey said that the new Precourt Institute for Energy would provide funding for additional faculty and graduate students, to supplement to $30 million already spent each year on energy research.
Hennessey said that the Institute will be at the forefront in development of more efficient photovoltaic cells, atmospheric carbon reduction and research on sustainable fuels. Oil executive Jay Precourt gave $50 million to found the Institute and Thomas Steyer and Kat Taylor gave $40 million to found the the TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy that will be a part of the institute.
