In France, an emphasis in cellulosic ethanol research collaboration has been in enzyme development. Recently, Proteus announced such an agreement with Syngenta.
The undisputed European leader in cellulosic enzyme development to date has been Denmark’s Novozymes, which recently established a $25 million advanced enzymes research project in partnership with the US DOE.
However, Proteus offers industrial manufacturing capabilities, unique proprietary technologies including an exclusive biodiversity (source of new genes), protein engineering tools and a protein manufacturing platform to its partners. Syngenta said that the agreement with Proteus will allow it to accelerate its development of optimized enzymes based on Syngenta’s core competency in plant expression.
