US ethanol capacity shrinks 5 percent in 3 months, to 10.6 Bgy

In New York, Reuters is reporting that total US ethanol production capacity has fallen five percent to 10.6 billion gallons since the beginning of the financial crisis in September, while the number of open plants has declined to 175 from 181. A full report table is available here. Current capacity is still above the 10.5 billion gallons required under the 2009 Renewable Fuel Standard ethanol mandate.

    1. So where do we go from here? Blogger James has a very interesting article on the issue. He also refers to an article about how ethanol producers are experiencing turbulent times. He argues that more investments be made in the production of cellulosic ethanol, which doesn’t use corn as raw materials.
