University of Rochester students develop sustainable, integrated campus biodiesel operation
In New York, students at the University of Rochester have proposed a university-funded biodiesel project that would supply biodiesel from a 120-gallon reactor to the university fleet. UR students Daniel Fink, David Borrelli and Eric Weissman were primary instigators of the project, which will utilize waste vegetable oil from campus dining facilities, waste methanol from UR labs, cogenerated heat from the university’s radiant flooring system, and a reactor located in the university’s engineering department. Glycerine from the operation will be turned over to a local anaerobic digester, where glycerine supplements can substantially improve yields.
