In Georgia, researchers at the University of Georgia Center for Molecular Bioengineering have proposed a 10 Mgy ethanol plant that would convert fruit harvest waste into ethanol. The researchers point out that more than 500,000 tons of watermelons and 30,000 tons of peaches are left in Georgian fields because they are unsuitable for the human consumption market. The waste, say the researchers, should be harvested for the 10 percent sugar content that can be converted to ethanol and the potential to manufacture dried distillers grains.
