Algae-to-energy roundup says economic slowdown buys algae companies time; Solix reporting $32.81 cost per gallon for algal fuel
Mass High Tech has published a roundup of algae-based biofuels development, concluding that the economic crisis has slowed the pace of algae biofuels development, but “buys these companies time” according to Dennis Costello of Braemar Energy as quoted in an excellent roundup article. GreenFuel, Algenol, Codon Devices and Solazyme are among the companies discussed in the roundup.
Meanwhile, Greentech Media has profiled the state of development at Solix Biofuels, which confirmed that it can produce algae-based fuel on a scaled-up basis at this point, but for $32.81 per gallon. Solix, which has a photobioreactor-based technology, said that it can reduce the cost to $5.50 per gallon by eliminating external power consumed in drying its algae and powering the bioreactors, and reducing it further to $3.50 per gallon through sales of algae-based byproducts including proteins.
