John M. Urbanchuk, Director, LECG LLC: “At year’s end, the ethanol industry comprised 172 operating plants in 25 states with production capacity of 10.6 billion gallons. The economic challenges in 2008 prompted a wave of bankruptcies including one major producer that closed 12 plants representing nearly 1.2 billion gallons of capacity. Nationwide, 23 ethanol plants accounting for 1.7 billion gallons of capacity were idled during the year.”
University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer, on the launch of the Community Integrated Model of Economic and Resource Trajectories for Humankind (CIM-EARTH): “There is a growing urgency for energy policy reform, but it would be short-sighted to make any serious changes without a thorough understanding of the technical, economic and social implications. CIM-EARTH will equip policymakers around the globe with a multi-dimensional analysis of their options, which is our best chance at implementing effective, long-term solutions.”
