Qantas prods Aussies to get going on biofuels

In Australia, the national airline Qantas has urged the federal government to increase efforts to foster a domestic biofuels industry. The company said that the government’s recent report on the airline industry did not include consideration of the potential for locally produced biofuels to help airlines reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The company said that, as a single airline, it did not have the resources to develop locally-made biofuels, but said that a public-private partnership could get the job done. Local scientists have discouraged the production of jatropha in Australia, considering it an invasive species, and have suggested a focus on drought-tolerant legume trees such as acacias.
