In Louisiana, researchers at Louisiana Tech University have developed a natural algicide that allows algae aquaculture farmers to help keep unwanted blue-green algae (cynaobacteria) from contaminating their ponds. It is specific for certain strains of cynaobacteria and does not harm other species. The University is also developing a technology that helps harvest nutrients (lipids and carbohydrates) within algae with less energy intensity than presses or sonication and reduces the cost of oil extraction. The technology is available for licensing, contact Richard Kordal at Louisiana Tech for more info.
