In Washington, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva met with US President Barack Obama to discuss opportunities to partner on greenhouse gas emission reduction projects, including President Obama’s proposed “Energy Partnership of the Americas” to generate sustainable growth and clean energy. Brazil has embarked on a program to reduce illegal deforestation in the Amazon region by up to 70 percent, in adiiton to expanding the scope of its sugarcane ethanol industry that now supplies half of Brazilian fuel and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent compared to gasoline.
