NBB, Indigenous Energy release report concluding that soy biodiesel reduces GHG emissions by 78 percent compared to diesel
In Illinois, the National Biodiesel Board (NBB) and emissions tracking system developers Indigenous Energy, released a new report that concludes that use of soy-based biodiesel will reduce carbon emissions by 78 percent compared to petroleum-based diesel.
The life cycle analysis was based on tests involving two 2007 model International 8600 tractors and one Freightliner truck on soy-based B99. Four addition trucks were operated on soy B5 over a six-month period. The straight petroleum CO2 emission would have been 69 tons for the tested vehicles, but dropped to 19.8 tons for the B99 trucks. The results were consistent with the B5 trucks.
The NBB said that, in addition, particulates were reduced by 199 pounds, carbon monoxide by 500 pounds and there were smaller reductions in sulphur dioxide and hydrocarbon releases.
