In Michigan, a University of Michigan design team won the inaugural Clean Energy Prize from DTE Energy, Masco and The Kresge Foundation for an algae-to-energy system that utilizes solid waste from wastewater plants for nutrients, and simultaneously improves water quality.
The team of PhD candidates and recent business school grads said they are targeting clean water and clean energy with their system design and business plan.
The $65,000 first prize money is expected to be seed money for the clean energy enterprise.
