Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize announces 111 registrants including E85, biodiesel and biobutanol teams

The Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, which offers a $10 million prize to vehicles that achieve greater fuel economy than 100 miles per gallon, announced its list of 111 registrants. The competition will commence in May 2010 and will include a long-distance stage comeptition. The prize is expected to be awarded in 2010.

Team come from 25 US states and 10 foreign countries. The list includes early-stage companies such as Aptera Motors, Lightning Hybrids, Myers Motors, Tesla Motors, and ZAP, but only one auto major in Tata Motors. Most competitors are using all-electric or hybrid system,s, and teams using E85 ethanol, biodiesel and biobutanol are among registered competitors.
