Researchers decode genome of two algae species: could unlock secrets of carbon absorption

In California, researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and the DOE’s Joint Genome Institute have successfully decoded the genetic structure of two major species of ocean-based microalgae, called Micromonas.

The species dates back 3 billion years, and the researchers reported in Science that the two species shared 90 percent of their genetic structure, after sequencing more than 10,000 genes. The researchers said study of the genetic structure would advance understanding of carbon sequestration and the potential development of new sources of biofuels.
