Today in Biofuels Opinion: “we are on target to be at fuel economics of $60–$80 per barrel of crude algal oil in 24–36 months.”

Harrison Dillon, Solazyme: “Getting to fuel economics is crucial. The fact of the matter is that no matter how environmentally conscious and clean your fuel is, people will not pay more for a gallon of diesel. As with any process development refinement, getting the last mile of cost saved is the longest mile—we are close, though. Solazyme is continuing to drive down the cost of production; we are on target to be at fuel economics of $60–$80 per barrel of crude algal oil in 24–36 months.”

Patricia Monahan, Union of Concerned Scientists
: “California’s low carbon fuel standard is a critical part of the state’s strategy to build a clean energy economy…Scientific studies conclude that growing biofuels in the United States can trigger deforestation and other land use changes in other countries, resulting in more heat-trapping emissions going into the atmosphere. If we do not account for these emissions, the standard could result in more pollution than if we continued to rely on gasoline and diesel. The biofuel industry’s call for ’sound science’ is dishonest. The science is clear on this point. California needs a biofuels industry that’s part of a clean energy economy, not one that receives a blank check to pollute.”
